Relaxed Ribbing stitch
Relaxed Ribbing at the top and bottom of the Boat Neck Jumper
The loose ribbing stitch is a stitch which can be used for the edging of the jumpers, cardigans, sweaters, socks and so on.
The Loose ribbing stitch is worked in 2 rows repetition. It provides the ribbing look but without the restricted and extra voluminous nature of full ribbing stitch.
I have enclosed few photos of cardigans and jumpers in which it can be clearly seen the effects of the loose ribbing stitch.
Written pattern UK terminology
Chain a multiple of 2+4
Foundation row
tc the 4th chain from the hook
tc in all stitches
Row 1
Ch1 – does not count as a stitch , 2 tc in the next 2 st
(2 fptc, 2 tc) repeat until the end of the row – round
Row 2
Ch1- does not count as stitch
(2bptc, 2 tc) repeat until the end of the row – round
Repeat row 1 and 2 until the length is accomplished.
Always work the fptc in the bptc and bptc in the fptc.
Tip: when working in the round make sure you have odd number of 2s and then add 4 chains
For instance, the diagram below presents this
chain 10 +4
in this way the last 2 stitches will complement the first 2 stitches in the instance of the second round 2 fptc will match the 2 tc when joined together.
